According to the bestselling author Malcom Gladwell it takes about 10,000 hours doing something in order to become a master or expert at it. That equates to working on your craft 8 hours a day 365 days a year for about 3 and a half years. Three and a half years is not a long time but making that kind of time commitment is unrealistic to many of us. We have jobs, children and a host of many other obligations that keeps us from making that kind of commitment.
Even though you might not have that kind of time to commit to your craft, you can take as long as you need in order to limit the hours a day perfecting your craft…even if it takes 5 or 6 years, it will be well worth it. With that being said there are a number of things you can do that will get you closer to becoming an expert in your craft or business venture.
One of the first things you should do is commit to working on your craft EVERYDAY. You may not be able to put in 8 hours a day, but if you work on it everyday it will become engrained in your subconscious. This allows you to work more with your natural instincts with less effort. Try and get at least a half hour to 45 minutes everyday. You’ll be surprised at the progress you’ll make.
Schedule your work hours and stick to them. And when things come up (which they always do), make sure you re-schedule the work you were supposed to do to a later time in that day, in order to keep your schedule. Bottomline, just make sure you get in your work every single day.
The next thing I want to talk about will have a Vast affect on getting you to your goal of mastering your craft. I wnat to show you this strategy by using this story as an example of how it works. This story may seem like I’m getting away from the subject that we’re talking about, but the principals of the strategy can be used at perfecting your craft.
The Strategy That Turned a Failing Company Into a Dynasty
This story is about a steel corporation. The name of this corporation was Bethlehem Steel Corporation. The company was run by a man named Charles Schwab. Mr. Schwab wanted to know how he could run his business more efficiently and profitable.
Charles hired a consultant named Ivy Lee. He made a deal with the consultant that stipulated that if Ivy could make his company more profitable, he would pay him a hefty fee…but if he couldn’t, he wouldn’t pay him a red cent. to make a long story short, Ivy didn’t come back to Charles with balance sheets and data statistics like Charles thought he would. He came back with a simple plan that Charles thought any moron could have come up with. But he figured, I may as well try it…if it dosen’t work, I don’t have to pay him…I’m not out anything. This is the stategy Ivy came up with. He handed Mr. Schwab a blank piece of paper and instructed him to take 15 minutes and write down a list of jobs he needed to do or improve that would make his company run more profitable and effiencient. When Mr. Schwab finished he asked him a question. “If you could only get one of these tasks done today, which one would it be”? Mr Schwab went down the list and picked one. After that Ivy told him to do the same thing over and over until the list had nothing left on it. Mr. Schwab took another 20 minutes completing the instructions Ivy told him to do. Ivy then told him, “Starting tomorrow, make sure you don’t leave your office until you’ve completed every task on your list in the order that you have them”….”And make sure you do this complete process every night before you go to bed in order to have the task you need to complete the next day”. Needless to say Charles Schwab ended up paying Ivy Lee a pretty hansome fee…and was quoted as saying, “This was the greatest business advice anyone has ever givin me”.
Behtlehem Steel Corporation went on to become the second-largest steel producer and largest ship builder in America. And it was all because of what seemed like a simple to-do-list that Ivy Lee the consultant introduced to Charles Schawb.
You can apply this same strategy to master and become an expert in your craft. And if you don’t get through all the items on your list on a certain day, just carry them over to the next day. At the end of the year you’ll find that you’ve accomplished more by incorporatinnng this method than you could have using any other.
Moving on, I’d like to show you 4 ways to get you as near to mastering your craft as possible. The first way is…
Learn something new everyday
You should practice mastering the basics. The best way to do that is to break down the basics into smaller segments and master each segment one at a time. Before you know it, you’ll have mastered all the basics. Then you want to make sure you don’t go one day without learning something new about your craft. This way you’ll be learning your business from the ground up so to speak.
Take the example of how McDonalds train their managers. Sure they send them through their training. But when they start at a franchise, they don’t start as a manager…they start at the bottom (fries). Just like the way a CEO of a company starts his/her son at the bottom of the company before they put them in an executive position….this way they’ll know the business inside out.
In many cases, mastering a craft is an ongoing learning experience. So always keep yourself in an ongoing learning mindset. This is especially true in this age of modern technology.
10,000 Hours
As stated before, statistics show that it takes approximately 10,000 hours at working at something to become a master at it…which would take you about 3 and a half years if you worked on it 8 hours a day for 365 days.I’m sure you might be saying to yourself, “Man, thats a lot of days and hours”. But don’t look at it like that. Just like a house is built one brick at a time, that’s how you should look at building your business. Maybe it might take you longer than three and a half years to becoming a master at your craft. So what. If you have a legitimate business venture you should stay commited to it anyway. Before you know it, your business will become second nature to you because it will become ingrained in your subconscious…and you will be considered a master at your craft.
Be Patient
Nothing worth doing is easy, everything takes a proccess. If you want to master anything, you have to go through a process…which is a learning process. The legendary singer Diana Ross once said”If it were easy, anybody could do it”. Don’t think for once that famous musicians came out the womb playing their instuments. They had to learn the scales and practice before they mastered their instruments. When you see them in concert, you don’t see all the hours they had to practice to get as good as they are. Learning is a process and most people don’t want to take the time to go through this process. All of this takes Patience. They’ll be times when it seems like you aren’t making any progress, but you have to hang in there and keep working hard at it.
For example, as a youngster, I always dreamed of playing the piano. the problem was I didn’t have the patience. I wanted to be able to play like a seasoned musician. Every musician I asked “how did they learn to play”, told me the same thing. “I practiced and practiced and practiced…then one day I woke up and I could play”.
I didn’t understand then but I do now. Through all of that practice-sarting with the basics-all the pieces came together in their subconscious which lead to them becoming accomplished musicians. I’m sure there were times when they thought they weren’t getting anywhere while they practiced. but they kepted working hard at it and it eventually paid off.
So you have to be patient…It won’t come overnight. Remember a house is built one brick at a time. Eventually all the pieces will come together for you, and you’ll have mastered your craft.
Choose a MENTOR
There is no better way of becoming an expert faster than to get a good mentor. Studies show that a good mentor can lead to greater career success, including promotions, raises and increased opportunities.
Some of the benifits of getting a mentor are…
They can help you stay focused.
They give you support and encoragement.
They help you learn the direction you should be headed to achieve your goals.
They give you self-confidence.
They help you LEARN.
When choosing a mentor, you should ask yourself a few questions.
First, do you admire this persons for their achievements and experience?
Will you be able to work well with this person?
Can they guide you to your goals?
Do they love what they’re doing?
Do you have the same values?
Can they introduce you to important contacts?
Will they be honest with you on your progress?
These are important questions that you should have the answers to before you take on a mentor, because they will have questions you need to answer before they’ll take you under their wing. Questions like…
Can you take constuctive criticism?
What are your goals?
What do you need to learn to get you there?
Are you commited?
And sometimes, Do you bring any value to them?
Finding a good mentor is a sure fired way to achieving success than any other method. A good mentor will show you the best way to achieve someething… they’ll keep you from making costly mistakes that’ll slow you down or push you behind. But there’s one thing about finding a mentor…
Finding the right mentor is one thing….Asking them to be your mentor is another.
How to ask someone to be your Mentor
First of all, you can’t just walk up to someone or email them and ask them to be your mentor…especially if you’ve never formed a relationship with them. They might think you’re some kind of nut. I recommend you start out by getting to know the person through email, Chatbox, Instagram Facebook or whatever communication you use…be casual and friendly…but make sure you approach it as a business friendship and let the relationship Evolve.
Eventually let them know how much you admire their work. As time goes by in the relationship, ask them for some advice on something you’re doing. When you get to the point where you’ve formed a strong relationship ask them if they’d like to set up a scheduled meeting (by phone, email or in person) to talk about business.
If that goes well, you can introduce the possibility of setting recurring meetings…if you know them well you might be able to make a more afficial request. In that meeting ask them if they would mind becoming a mentor to you. Let them know the value they’ll get from you, whether that’s financially, business or both.
When you make your request, make sure you let your mantor know exactly what you’re looking for in the relationship. Let them know how often you want to communicate with them…whether it’s once a week or once a month. Clearly discribe the guidance you’re seeking and confirm your willingness to take advice they’re giving. No one wants to waste their time, so respect theirs.
Here’s an example of what you could say when you’ve already created a good relationship with your potential mentor.
“Hi Dave, I just want to tell you how I”ve enjoyed the many conversations we’ve had in the past. I respect you and the way you’ve grown your business. I value your expertise in the industry because you’ve givin me some great advice in the past. I’m beginning my own business and I know that there are a few areas that I need to get better at. In order to develope my business more effectively,I could use some mentoring(mainly in my writing skills).
I promise not to take much of your time…I just need to ahve your input once or twice a month in which I’ll gladly compensate you for (whatever is agreed to) your time. I guarantee this won’t be a waste of your time, because I do value your advice and will put whatever advice you give me into action.
Whether yoou agree or not to this mentor-mentee relationship, please call or email me to let me know. No hard feelings if you don’t… but if you do lets comunicate to discuss the details”.
Sincerly Yours.
Always be courteous no matter if they except your offer or not. Thank them and move on to your next potential mentor. And remember, just because they turned you down dosen’t mean you should stop communicating with them. There are a number of other ways they can still help you…and you help them as well.
Conclusion
Mastering your craft takes time, that’s why you need patience…but if you stay commited to working on it, you’ll master it sooner than you think. Remember, you walk a mile by taking one step at a time.
With that being said, always give GOD the glory in everything you do. Put HIM first and HE’LL direct your path.
In closing, remember to do the necessary things to protect you and your family until we get a vaccine to rid us of this terrble virus. May GOD see us through it. Until next time …Have a BLESSED DAY, and keep working hard.
