Every business, no matter how large of small needs to implement SEO (search engine optimization) in their marketing strategy. In order to see why SEO is so important consider this, 81% of customers, 94% of b2b buyers will perform a search online before they make a purchase…and the higher you rank in the search engine, the more likely they’ll find you. This is where SEO comes into play.
Before I get more into detail about this subject, let’s talk about the differences between content marketing and SEO marketing.
Content marketing is focused using valuable and relevant content to drive profitable customers or clients to a specific action. Whereas SEO marketing refers to the technical process of increasing the quality of traffic and attracting maximum visitors to your website. Though they are slightly different they go hand-in-hand. You don’t want to use one without the other.
There’s also a number of advantages you gain by incorporating SEO in your marketing strategy. For one…
It helps your targeted audience find you. By using the same words they use when they search in the search engine…your content will likely come up before others.
You’ll generate more traffic by getting ranked higher in the search engine. The higher you rank, the more clicks and traffic you get.
Helps you stay ahead the the competition because by getting a larger percent of the traffic will mean your competitors will be getting less percentage.
Builds your brand because of all the traffic you’ll generate.
It’s very easy to measure because, unlike traditional marketing methods that have to measure results between ad campaigns and sales…through the use of software tools (most of them free), you can measure every metric (traffic, conversion, trends and much more) to see how you’re doing and where you need to improve.
Another advantage is it doesn’t require a lot of money because you don’t have to pay for things like space ads the way traditional marketing has to. In traditional marketing you have to figure out what channel your brand is going to appear. It could be a tv or radio station, pages in a newspaper or magazine. Then you have to consider the length of time your ad runs or how many issues in a magazine…which could we up to tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. But with SEO marketing you can appear in organic results free. The only thing you need to concentrate on is getting ranked as high as possible in the search engines. And these are only just a few of the many advantages of including SEO in your marketing strategy.
For those of you who are new to affiliate marketing, the question you may be asking yourself is…
What is SEO?
Wikipedia defines SEO(search engine optimization) as the process of growing the quality and quantity of website traffic by increasing the visibility of a webpage to users of a web search engine. In layman’s terms, it’s the process of increasing the quality and quantity of traffic by getting organic (unpaid traffic from search engine result page. Basically SEO refers to acquiring quality free traffic. So what’s the process?
There is no fixed set of techniques for SEO marketing because all businesses are not the same. But there are some basic fundamental principles you can follow.
SEO is about understanding what people in your targeted audience are searching for online. Your job is to find out the the words they’re using in their search, the answers they are looking for and the kind of content they want to consume.
The SEO Process
There are a number of tactics to use in your self marketing strategy. I’m going to give you 3 basic steps to take when you start. There are more steps but these three will get you started. The three steps are…
Research
Content Building
Analyzing and improving Your Performance
RESEARCH: When I say research, I’m basically referring to keyword research. Keyword research is when you identify a group of words or phrases that you plan to use in your content heading and body. This is a critical step because you want your words to resonate with your readers. You do that by using the same words they use in their search. And how do you find this information?
Through a few free online tools like..
Google Keyword Planner which shows you the volume each word or phrase has each month, the competition whether it’s high or low and a host of other good things.
LSI Graph gives you the top keyword phases that users are using. They also give you the top ten content headlines and articles used on your topic.
Answer the Public is another great keyword tool that shows you the questions that users are asking online on for a specific topic.
After you find the keyword and phrases you want to use, you want to find out what and how your competition is doing…by doing a thorough competitive analysis.
First you need to do a market research analysis. Start by looking at your product or service and evaluate which other companies are selling the product or service that would compete with yours. Try and pick 7 to 10 of them. Then you can use a wonderful tool called Ubersuggest. This site will allow you to find out your competitors top keywords, number of backlinks, where they came from and their top pages. Along with…
Average monthly search volume of the keyword
The position the URL is ranking in Google search.
The estimated competition in organic search.
This is some valuable information to have because you’ll see what’s working, what’s not, what angle you should take when writing your content, along with almost being able to read your prospects mind.
CONTENT BUILDING. As stated earlier, content marketing and seo marketing go hand in hand. You want people to see your message and the best way to accomplish that is by getting ranked as high as possible in the search engines. Creating high quality, high volume content related to your business…using the keywords and phrases you researched for WILL attract traffic.
note: Don’t bury your keywords and phrases in the body of your copy. Put them in your title and in the beginning of your content if possible. But NEVER, I mean NEVER stuff your content with keywords in order to get ranked. For one thing, search engines recognize this and will punish you for it. But you also want your content to sound natural. Stuffing keywords and phases will make your conversation sound fake.
Another part of content building is building backlinks. Building links is a sure fired way of getting traffic as well as getting ranked.
This process can sometimes be difficult. You can ask other writers for links, but they are just like most people in they want to know why should they and what’s in it for them.
There are a number of ways you can build links to your site, but before you should focus on quality links opposed to quantity. For example, it’s better to have 5 links that have hundreds of thousands followers each than 30 links with 50 to 70 followers. Finding good quality links will not only generate traffic to your site but will increase your credibility and trust as a business.
So, how do you build links?
Start out by making a list of your keywords and phrases. The use Google to find quality post related to those keywords. Try to find the ones you can guest blog on and the ask them for a backlink.
Hint: you stand a better chance at getting a backlink if you find someone who is linked to 3 or 4 of your competitors. If they link to them, there’s a good chance they’ll link to you.
And then there’s linking using Social Media.
Google has said that social media shares do not influence their search rankings. But even though that’s been said, social media still offers a great way to build links…the opportunities are just indirect.
Due to social medias massive popularity, which is in the billions, you’ll be able to increase your brand exposure, build relationships with influencers and increase rankings through the shear increase engagement.
You can guest list the same way you would for a blog. This strategy could even be more valuable than if you created a new post on your own site…if you get a backlink.
You’ll be leaving traffic in the billions of you don’t use social media.
The last thing I want to talk about is…
Analyzing and Improving Performance
Writing great content using specific keywords and backlinking is only half the battle.
When you create your content, you want see how your site is performing. There are a number of free tools you can use to keep up how your site is doing.
One free tool I recommend is called Google Analytics. This tool tracks everything from site traffic to browser distribution. Using this tool along with Data Box…which is a data dashboard that integrates with just about anything and will make your data analysis more manageable…will make analyzing your site much easier and you will see where you’re doing good and where you need to improve.
Buzzmo is another great tool that will show you what type of content performs best by domain, brands and backlinks, keyword influencers and competitor analysis.
